Rather predictably, Poole Town will face local rivals Wimborne Town in the Southern League Cup’s first round.
Thanks to the Southern League’s policy of local draws in the competition, it seemed likely that the Dolphins would face either of the Dorset Magpies.
Dolphins last foray in the competition was a 4-2 defeat at home to Wimborne.
The two rivals have been frequent opponents in the competition, with their first meeting coming in 2012. Wimborne ran out 3-0 winners at the old Cuthbury in the Second round of the competition.
Poole immediately avenged that defeat by knocking the Magpies out on penalties the following year.
Tom Killick led Dolphins to victory in the 2014/15 edition of the competition – with their run to the final starting with a victory over Wimborne.
Since winning the competition, Poole’s interest in the Southern League Cup has waned – as evidenced by their lack of victories in the competition since returning to the Southern League in 2018.
A penalty shoot-out win away at Dorchester has since been followed by two defeats to Wimborne.
The tie will be held on the 5th of October, marking the Dolphins’ first visit to Wimborne’s new stadium.
